Description
This is an older piece; made it about 2012. I was just getting back into ceramics and looking to test my hand-building skills. I was also exploring what I could do visually with the textured area. I made several pieces that have that element. It’s a juxtaposition that I’ve gone back to many times. I like pairing materials too, typically ceramic with wood or steel elements.
There was no way that I was thinking this was a dharma analogy back then. But maybe one can be applied after the fact. For this and a few other pieces with this motif, the rough area was meant to give a better grip. It’s the place where the hand goes, where the work is done. I guess you could say that symbolizes how we have to look at the rough areas of our practice and put the work in there.
Really what it was at the time was liking the look and feel of it. The balance of the pot is good with your hand around the textured surface. It pours well from there. The cups are wide in the palm. The texture offers grip without needing a handle. They’re thick enough to keep your tea warm. and darn it! they just look cool!
